I am curious about getting one, after seeing a segment about it on the Today Show recently. It looked like fun, and they said it is great for toning and exercise.

As a child, I loved to hula hoop, and could do it with ease. This was back in its heyday. I tried once a few years ago and couldn't keep it up, but I understand the adult fitness hula hoops that are weighted are easier to keep up. There are DVDs to teach you how to use one.

I walk in place an hour everyday, and that's working for me. I enjoy it, because I either listen to my IPod or watch something I have recorded on TV, so the time flies by. I do it in two 30 minute sessions. But I would love a little variety, and the hula hoop sounds like fun. It's already too hot down here in south Georgia to walk outside, so I need an indoors activity. If you have tried it, let me know what you think, and if anyone has any pointers on the best kind of hoop to get, I'd like to know that, also.

Thanks, Rose

No Motivation to Exercise

Despite the fact that I'm following the 4 rules and listening to both the CD that came with the book and the Overnight Success Program, I have yet to be motivated to exercise. I've not been sleeping well either, is that what causes low motivation?

Do hormones cause lack thereof? What would cause me to be this way?

I've never been a HUGELY active person except in high school when I was a cheerleader. There were plenty of parking spaces away from the store, but I saw several vehicles just idling, waiting for a space close to the store! With the price of gas going up and people just wasting it because they are too dadgummed lazy to walk a few more feet to the store entrance. NO WONDER AMERICA HAS AN OBESITY EPIDEMIC GOING ON! I like parking away from the store, always have. If the parking lot is completely full I will park at the first spot that comes open, but given a choice (even in the rain) I would rather park at the far end of the lot. I just can't get over the laziness of we americans. Plus the fact where they are complaining about the price of gas, and they turn around and waste it. I just don't get it.

Babyphat42

up the stairs -down the stairs

ok-im a world class coach potato -so motivation to move, any movement is a real challenge for me...and i've been faithfully listening to all my dvd's and my reprogramming cd at night. following the 4 golden rules is easy peasy lemon squeezy for me, cravings, i just do the craving busters.. but moving... ok this week i just said, bite the bullet and stop using the elevator at work whenever possible ( and don't think i don't rationalize using it whenever possible -even when its only two stories up to my office at work.

so for this week the goal has been down two flights at break time and up two flights. it feels like decades to walk it, but i am doing both flights. yes i am slow. if this were the freeway I'd be the person you all would be yelling at to get off the road...but i figure every day for the next two weeks once a day i'll go down then up, then i'll do it twice a day for two weeks, then i'll hopefully be able to walk the extra 2000 steps daily that i need to..

anyway anyone else challenged to move is free to join the slow lane with me :)

good luck all

trish

Having different choices is important

So yesterday I did not go out on the bike and today, that was the intention, I sliced a finger while making some yummy cole slaw...

So what is one to do?

Well, after I took care of that finger and had lunch, I felt tired, had a nap and after that stepped on my Gazelle

Ok, here are two observations

I had a nice stroll, and did not have a problem doing 20 minutes of gazelle (ok 21)... and it used to be that my legs hurt at seven

So that is what i call being in better shape...

Now enjoying some nice water.

And since i need that thumb to switch gears, better heal fast. I need to loose 146 pound to reach my goal weight.

My worst moments of being fat I can recall:

My father and I used to go skiing together before I was married. After getting married, I started gaining weight. A few years later, he invited me to go skiing with him. I wanted to go so he came over to my house with some skiing equipment.

My calves were to big to fit into the ski boots!!! He just put his head down in disappointment and tried to be caring, but we both knew, if I didn't lose the weight, I may never ski again.

I went to my room and cried. (My eyes are tearing up right now as I type and recall the memory)

Another time, my kids and I went to Disneyland. My son wanted to go on a rollercoaster ride. We waited in line, seemed like forever. I climbed into the seat. It was tight, but my butt barely fit. Then the ride operator tried to put the shoulder cage over the top of me to make it latch to hold me in, because this ride when upside-down. She pushed and shoved, then called for another worker to help which stopped the the line and everyone was watching. They both pushed and bounced the coaster car with no luck. She told me that we couldn't ride. My son was so disappointed, he cried. I cried inside!!! And then agian later at the hotel.

THIS IS WHY I AM SO MOTIVATED. I REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES AND I WANT THEM BACK!!!!!!

I am motivated and excited. Losing all the guilt that comes from "doing something wrong" on one of those other programs. Or should I say, torture regimens. I feel diet-liberated!!

One of my most motivating thoughts is wanting to do the things I used to do when I was thin and active.I want to share those times with my children and give them the wonderful blessing of being active and healthy. When I lose the weight, I will be able to make sure they wont have the same weight probem I've had my whole life.

1. Teach my kids to snowski. (I used to race in the Giant Slolom race in Park City, UT)

2. Ride on amusement park rides with my kids instead of sitting and waiting for them. (Cant fit in the seats yet)

3. Go swimming in public with my kids.

Even when I was thin, I would binge on food. Luckily, I was active enough to burn it off. I had a 3 year span of getting to do the things "thin people" got to do.

I will be successful this time, I can feel it. Using these techniques of Paul's keeps me on track.

I WILL NEVER LOOK BACK!!!

I love this forum as well.

Joanna

Ah more energy

So my hubby and I went to catch a movie.... and I kept stepping up the pace

Realize I used to have to tell him to SLOW DOWN!

We had a great time, and since I knew no bike for me today... when we got home I looked at glucometer and stepped onto the Gazelle... Add to that my appetite, which has been ferocious, and not being able to cook or plan meals ahead of time, and one could say that I have officially fallen off the wagon. What makes it even MORE difficult for me is that I have Celiac disease, and have to stick to a totally gluten free menu, which, for those who have gluten sensitivity know, is an ENORMOUSLY difficult task; there's almost nowhere I can go to get a gluten free meal except my own kitchen, which is out of commission. Today, I decided to weigh myself anyway, just to see how bad things were, and I was happy to find that I have lost 3 more pounds, despite not following the rules.

(It just goes to show that moving DOES work!!)

Now, this is not to say that I am abandoning the program altogether; this house renovation project has been very physical and unusual activity for me, and I credit the hot weather and heavy workload for keeping up the weight loss (and, all those stairs I have to climb, now). But honestly, I can't wait to get moved in and able to plan and prepare meals again in my new kitchen, and go back to practicing the 4 golden rules and a slightly more sedentary life (believe me, if you worked as long and hard as I have in the last two months, you'd want to slow down, too!).

I have not lost faith in the program, but life and circumstances have intervened for the moment. I don't see how I can apply the 4 golden rules at this time while I have no established routines at the moment.

Cankles

Gas prices.... yes they are also a way to motivate you

We have had these fuel prices go through the roof. We all know that. So here is a good thing about walking and biking these days... as you do that, you also help your pocket book... and a side benefit the environment

So if you are feeling down about doing your walking, think of how much you can help your pocket book by actually taking the bike out instead of driving.

Now also remember when you do this to PACE yourselves.

Be Careful not to exert yourself to the point of being dangerous.

So if it takes you longer to get somewhere local for an errand, because you need to rest, DO IT. Don't be embarrassed. But as you get fitter, think of that, and you might be able to smile as you ride by a gas station...

That is a way to also reach motivation
:D

Motivation

Hello everyone! I just wanted to add this for everyone to look at and realize it can happen. This is not a personal experience, but an experience of one of my students. I have a student that was extremely obese; I do not know how much he weighed originally. Since the beginning of the school year (September) he has lost 130 pounds. He has applied the principles of McKenna's program to his life and he WALKS and WALKS and WALKS. That is the main thing he has done to lose the weight; just by adding more and more walking to his normal day. He is an inspiration to me and hopefully this story will help others to get motivated just to WALK a little bit more each day!!!!!!!!

Not losing but feeling much more fit after 2 months.

Just wondering why it can be that I do 30 minutes on the eliptical 5 days per week plus many walks around the neighbourhood, follow all principals and still am not losing weight. Well to be fair I HAVE lost about 2 pounds or so the scale says.
I am feeling much more fit and healthy but cannot understand why the weight is not coming off. I was laying in my bed yesterday morning thinking about my day, and I said to myself "I can't do this anymore!".

Right away I felt the old "diet" mentality creep in. I didn't want to exercise. I didn't want to eat slowly. I didn't want to do any of it. I wanted to quit.

After a few minutes, I thought, "Can't do what anymore? What is it you actually can't do? You get to eat whatever you want. You enjoy wonderful food. You like exercising because it gives you energy and makes you feel wonderful. You're not on a "diet". Your life is changing for the better and you are losing weight. In fact, you can do this for the rest of your life!!!!!:D So get up, get going, and get motivated!!"

After this internal dialogue, I realized how easy it was to wash away the old thoughts of self sabotage and excuses, and to continue with Paul's awesome program. How easy it is to exercise everyday and to be in harmony with my eating. What a blessing it is to stay motivated with the 4 rules for a lifetime.

I remember how excited and motivated I was when I watched the very first show on TLC. Now, 67 days later I am just as motivated, if not more. I am seeing results and couldn't be happier. I've lost 27.5 pounds and 21 inches!!!

I hope this inspires the rest of you to keep you going when you think about giving up.

LOVE AND SUCCESS TO ALL!!

JOANNA

Question about number of steps ...

I've been trying to keep track of how many steps I take each day. (For men it’s about 6000 steps a day).
Ok, sounds good right?

I'm a stay at home mom. I don't go out much and it's just now starting to get warm enough to go for walks with my kids.

Does anyone know how many steps, on average, stay at home parents take? Is the number mentioned in the above quote for ALL men and women despite their different occupations (yes, I know that's an average number and not every single person takes the same amount of steps each day).

Thanks!

HELP - Missed last week's show

Hi Everyone - can anyone give me a quick tidbit of the show I missed last Sunday? Was told by the doctor to quit smoking and get down to about 150 lbs.(which is what I weighted when the injury happened in Sept/06). It took till Jan/08 to get in to see the surgeon. I quit smoking almost a month ago (26 days) and have done nothing but put on weight. Wonder how this program would work with VERY limited exercise. I am unable to even go walking as this causes too much pain. The cold weather also tends to seize me up, so with the coming of spring I plan on going to the local pool and doing some laps. Any thoughts?

Big Day!

I have been using a pedometer for about 5 weeks or so now. I am really motivated by it because I want to hit as many steps as I did the day before, if not more. (it has a 7 day memory) Anyways, I am stuck around 9-10,000 steps a day. I am not ashamed of that or anything because I am sure it is way more than I used to walk before this program. But I just cannot get much above that on a day-to-day basis. Yesterday, though, I walked almost 17,000 steps!! YEAH!! I played with my kids and we did a lot outside because the weather was really nice. I am thinking that the summer should bring out the best in my exercising because I will be more active; it is just natural to move more when it is nice outside. I am excited and happy!!

On the flip side though, I ate quite a bit of ice cream yesterday. We walked up to the party store and bought a little package of ice cream. I waited until I was hungry and really enjoyed it. I ate about half of the container--it was one of those small individual containers, but still. I really have not indulged myself in a formerly "forbidden" food since starting the program. It is strange. Although I used to get cravings for ice cream all the time, now I barely ever do. But I am glad I did it the right way and ate it CONSCIOUSLY. And let me tell you guys, it was DELICIOUS! But, honestly, I probably will not want ice cream again for a long time!!

Hopefully everyone else has been having luck with getting motivated and seeing results! I look forward to my volleyball games and my scheduled walks. I feel wonderful during and after my exercise, whatever it may be. I get such a feeling of empowerment and accomplishment after exercising knowing the wonderful life I am creating for myself and the results that will come.

After the supercharge your metabolism segment, I realized how I had been sabotaging myself all these years when it came to exercise. I had been convinced by all the "diet gurus" and "workout freaks" that you had to get your heart rate up to 120 or more and exercise for hours a day to change your body shape. This approach to exercise is simply...WRONG!!!

20 years ago, I used to go to aerobics every night, then go on an eating binge later, and couldn't understand why I wouldn't lose weight. I would workout til my face and turned red and my legs were rubber. I tried to convince myself it was fun when it really was torture. I did this for about 4 months without any weight loss success. I maintained but never got to the goal I was looking for. I eventually gave up because I emotionally hated it. I wish I knew how to harness these feelings back on the aerobics floor. I would have loved the classes and had a different attitude toward all exercise and movement in general.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! :D:D

Thank you Paul for the feelings of exhilaration when I pinch my fingers together during exercise and sometimes just before as a reminder as to why I move more each day. How my feelings of depression high-stress and inadequacy seem to disappear. How life seems more free and manageable, and things don't bother me as much as before.

I admit it. I am addicted. I've replaced my addiction to food with an addiction to exercise and I love it!!!! :Wow:

I encourage, yes, even challenge everyone to "move to lose" a little more each day. Get away from that "fat tube" called the TV. Wear your pedometors go outside on beautiful days, play with your kids, find any and every reason to move, and remember how wonderful moving, and life, really is!!

This is what I've been doing everyday and following the 4 rules. My life has changed in every way and I have Paul to thank for it!!

I would love to read any posts from anyone who feels the same way!!!

LOVE AND SUCCESS TO EVERYONE!!!

MOVE TO LOSE!!!:)

JOANNA

Wear a Pedometer to help motivate

One of the things that has helped me in the past to start exercising is to wear a pedometer. Buy one at a store or over the internet - don't spend too much on it - maybe $20. Wear it for the whole day from morning till night and check how many steps you took for the day. The next day, try to beat the previous days count. Beating it by any number will make you feel good because you achieved a goal and before you know it you will be walking all over the place and loving it. :)

Next thing you know, you will be losing weight and in a regular exercise pattern just walking.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT LOSS IS NORMAL

WITH REGARDS TO WEIGHT LOSS..

HOW MANY LBS A WEEK IS GOOD TO LOOSE?

IS LIKE A 3 LBS A WEEK A REASONABLE ASSUMPTION?

A TV free home

My husband and I were talking about the tv. Talking about the TV bill and our watching habits. I am a SAHM with two unschooled kids. I find that some days we watch too much tv. Yes it is mostly history channel, food network (kids love Good Eats), and discovery. But my son, when he is bored, will sneak into my bedroom and watch nick or disney. With the nice weather, we decided they would do well without a TV. They have the whole world out there. When I did send my kids to school, I would have the tv on all day. I did my house work and have it in the background but I sat and watched a lot too.

Since it has been off, we have read to each other more, hiked more, fished more, played games more. The yard is neater and so is the house. Because I am an early riser, I get on the computer in the morning, but I get on much less during the day.

I think this will be a very nice summer.;)

~Patty

Rainy Day Exersice

Sometimes when it rains, or whatever, one just can't outside and walk. My favorite thing is DDR (for you non gamers that is Dance Dance Revolution) on my Playstation. It is fun to open songs and beat the children at the game. My 15yo daughter HATES that she can hardly beat me. In the morning I put it on workout mode for 20 minutes, sometimes the little ones join me. It is a lot of fun.

What do you do at home to get exersice?

~Patty

Been exercising for the First Time in Years!!

Since watching Paul's program on March 23, 2008, I haven't been so motivated to exercise in years!! I was looking at exercise as a form of torture because it was something I had to do. Now its something I want to do!!

I look forward to each session on my treadmill. I know the good feeling will come and I am invigorated when finished. I love how Paul describes exercise on his TV program. "Just find something that makes you move more and more each day".

I used to think I had to walk really fast or do workout videos at the highest pace, in order to lose weight. Now, I know I just want to move. Get all my kinks out, and feel better!!

I have exercised every day, except Sundays, since watching Pau'ls Program. I have even started playing volleyball on Wed & Sat!

My goal weight is 129 pounds at 5'3. I have a long way to go, but with my new attitude toward "moving", I know I'll make it.

SUCCESS TO EVERYONE!!!!

START MOVING!!!!

JOANNA exercising

motivation

I am my own worst enemy, I seem to sabotage all my efforts to keep the weight off!
How do I keep myself charged even when I am over worked and too tired to behave?

Exercise for an amputee

My father is an amputee and has a hard time with moving around, most likely due to his excessive weight. I stood up folding laundry at the kitchen table putting each person's laundry in one corner...an extra 300 steps. I brought groceries in from the car instead of leaving them there for my husband to do (325 steps). I walked down every isle in the grocery store instead of just the ones I needed (and didn't buy anything extra)..250 steps. All in all almost 1000 steps extra just by doing a few extra things!

:D

Any other ideas?

stupid pedometer!!!

I went to the store this afternoon and looked at my pedometer before I went in. I looked after I was done and I guess I must have been flying because it didn't measure any steps!!! What's an acceptable amount of salt? For example I drink 1-2 Aquafina's Flavor Splashes a day. They contain 0 calories ut have 65mg per serving. So in this case it's 130mg per bottle.

I love it because it's water with just the little extra. Sometimes water is just boring, and I get sick of it. I try and stay away from Diet and Regular Soda so I thought this would be a good compromise.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks

have started excercising!

I am happy to read that others are also boosting the metabolism today. I went for a 45 minute walk and bought a coffee ,spoke to some neighbors on the way home, and I must say that it was fun! I used to love walking, but then after I had my daughter, I stopped and viewed it as something I HAD to do because I had put on weight. It was no longer any fun. I have decided to view it as fun, and when Mckenna said that 2,000more steps is only about a 15 minute walk, I thought to myself that even I can do that! So I did, and it was really fun to get out. I am tired of everything I do has to be to lose weight or if I dont do anything, I will probably gain weight. I just want some activity to be fun again, like it used to be. This is a great start!

Take the stairs and park far away from the door today!

That is what I did!:)

What about those who don't feel like eating at all?

My sister and I are both diabetic and overweight. We usually eat one meal a day and usually that is somewhat difficult to do. Snacks are rare for my sister and occasional for me, but even then that disrupts eating the meal for the day. Mostly we drink plenty of liquids. She is now on a fluid restriction because her body quit processing all the fluids she used to consume. Now she is restricted to only two liters of her beloved iced tea. I drink diet soda and bottled water to equal three liters a day. When I snack, I usually eat a piece of fruit though every great now and then I'll grab a couple pieces of candy or small snack bag of chips. My blood sugar is under control on the meds I'm on, as is my sister's blood sugar. We both have mobility issues of different types so neither of us is as active as we once were, but we still try to do all we can. I have been told that it is our fluid consumption that is hindering us from feeling hungry. Then again, I've heard that it is because our blood sugar stays naturally a little higher so that our bodies won't trigger hunger like it should. I really don't know what the cause is, but I know that we both find it difficult to want to eat when you don't feel hungry. The nutritionists have said we need to eat at regular intervals but it's impossible to eat that often! Even when we've tried, we each feel full to the point of bloat and being nauseated when we eat and aren't hungry. What do we do? Please let us know if there are any others out there who have experienced this and what you've done. I know my metabolism is so slow that my normal body temperature is 96.8 instead of the normal 98.6! We'd like to try this program, but our problem stems from not wanting to eat. If he hasn't got to the motivational anchor yet, just you wait. Its very effective.

As part of my drive to get slim and fit I signed up to do a 70 mile trek across Spain (14 miles a day for 5 days) :w00t: seemed a good idea at the time. I have used Dr McKenna's motivational technique in my preparation and it has been a real boon. One quick press of my finger and thumb and my legs take on a life of their own. Particularly useful on the approach to hills.

Good luck to you all

Water Excercise

Hello all:

When my girlfriend had knee problems she had to do pool therapy and invited me to join her (pre knee injury, mind you). One of the exercises I remember was knee lunges. Be in chest deep water. Take a big (as far as you can) step and do a deep knee bend that is comfortble for you. Water should hit you in the chin to mouth area. Do other leg. This should take you across the pool. It isn't hard to do and it doesn't hurt either because of the boyancy (sp?) of the water. We use to make it fun by having a race to the end.

Another is for the hips. At a standing position, lift one leg to the side and pivot that leg to the front so it is staight across the water and push/walk to new position, lift your other leg and pivot it to the front and step down. Do this across the pool. IT is a bit ackward but it works! Gosh, I hope this one made sense!
